The black and white graphite image is an original bell rubbing embellished by Stevens Jay Carter.
Stevens created the rubbing by climbing the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church's bell tower to access the historic bell donated to the church by Abraham Lincoln's daughter in 1929.
In 2008, the church engaged artist Stevens Jay Carter to capture an image of the inscription on the bell. The goal was to offer the image to President Barrack Obama as a creative and memorable gift of appreciation during his scheduled visit to the church located one block from the White House.
The inscription reads
TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN THE MEMORY OF
WHO WORSHIPED IN THIS CHURCH
WHILE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
THIS SET OF BELLS WAS
